The next-generation 911 is nearly upon us, but before we wave goodbye to the 997, Porsche has announced one last special edition: the GT3 RS 4.0.
Packing the biggest engine Porsche has ever shoehorned into its road-legal 911, the GT3 RS 4.0 is powered by a 4.0 litre flat-six producing 368kW at 8250rpm, and 460Nm of torque at 5750rpm.
That's 33kW more than the stock GT3 RS, and 44 more than the 'regular' 911 GT3. Among its mechanical enhancements are the GT3 RSR race car's crankshaft, along with titanium connecting rods for the forged pistons.
Weighing in at 1360kg, there's also a carbon fibre bonnet and front quarter panels, lightweight racing seats, plastic rear windows and even "weight optimised" carpets.
Other features include lateral air deflection vanes in the front bumper - a first for a production Porsche. Combined with the rear wing, these lead to addition downforce of 190kg at top speed.
The 0-100km/h sprint is banished in 3.9 seconds, and 200km/h comes up in "less than" 12 seconds.
Porsche says the GT3 RS 4.0 will lap the hallowed Nurburgring in 7:27 - besting the GT3 RS by a good six seconds and even toppling the Carrera GT's 7:28.7 time.
Australia
Local deliveries of the 911 GT3 RS 4.0 commence towards the end of 2011, with Australia to be allocated less than 10 of the restricted worldwide production.
Porsche’s ultimate naturally aspirated 911 road car will be priced at $409,100.
Look for the new 2012 Porsche 911 at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.
